while making music comes easily, rarely do i feel committed to a recording. a difficult distinction exists between improvisation and composition: for myself composition suggests written notes or chord sequences or structures or at least a set of rules. but if a composition is simply a collection of sounds that can be cut and played with almost randomly, when is it worth recording? the character of a recording depends heavily on one discrete performance, yet there could be extraordinary variations with repeated takes.
in the past this has created serious cognitive dissonance and i ceased considering this approach as true composition, which unnecessarily gained some sort of holy status. i'm still trying to get over it.
this was recorded in early 2007.
